Mile End Area Information
Mile End district is only 5.8km east-north-east of Charing Cross, it is on the road from London to Colchester road, which places it in the east part of London. It is also one of the first parts of the city of London to become a part of the metropolitan. It had a population of over 28,500, in 2011 according to a census.
The name of the area is quite interesting and it means “the hamlet a mile away’ and is derived from Middle English. At one point in history there were two areas – Mile End New Town and Mile End Old town. The Old town is currently a conservation area called the Stepney Green Conservation area (1973). Until 1954 the are used to have a People’s Palace which was a large complex (rebuilt after a fire in 1931) that contained a swimming pool, gymnasium, a library a winter garden, education spaces, etc.
